Session 1
Session 1 — Opening & Ground Rules §
This session sets the tone for the entire workshop. A warm, clear, and trust-building opening determines participant engagement for all subsequent sessions. Whether the audience is singles, new couples, or support families, every workshop begins here.
Welcome & Workshop Overview §
Begin by acknowledging the courage it takes to attend a workshop focused on personal and relational growth. This is a space for honest reflection, not judgment.
Key points to cover:
- Purpose of the workshop — education, enrichment, not therapy
- Overview of the full day/two-day schedule
- Introduction of facilitators and their backgrounds
- Logistics: breaks, prayer times, restrooms, meals
- Materials and handouts provided
Opening line suggestion: "We are here not because we have problems, but because we believe in building strong, conscious relationships."
Ground Rules & Participation Guidelines §
Suggested Ground Rules:
- Confidentiality — What is shared in this room stays in this room. We protect each other's privacy.
- Respect — Every person's experience is valid. We disagree with ideas, not people.
- Right to pass — No one is required to share. Participation is encouraged but never forced.
- Speak from experience — Use "I" statements. Speak about your own experience, not others'.
- One person at a time — We listen when others speak. No side conversations.
- Silence is golden — Allow moments of quiet for reflection.
- Phones on silent — Be present. The world can wait.
- Growth mindset — We are here to learn, not to perform or compete.
Participant Introductions Activity §
Option A — "One Word" Introductions (10 min, large groups)
Each participant shares: their name + one word that describes what they hope to gain from the workshop. The facilitator writes words on a flip chart to create a shared "intention cloud."
Option B — "Two Truths and a Wish" (25 min, smaller groups)
Participants share two true things about themselves and one thing they wish for in their marriage or family life. Group guesses which is the wish. Encourages authentic sharing from the start.
Option C — "Relationship Word" (20 min, mixed groups)
In pairs, participants share: their name, how long they have been married (or how long they have been considering marriage), and one word that describes their current relationship with family life. Pairs then introduce each other to the group.
Feedback Mechanism & Anonymous Questions §
Distribute index cards or a QR code for anonymous questions. Explain that participants can submit questions at any point during the workshop — even sensitive ones — and the facilitator will address them at appropriate moments.
This mechanism is especially important for topics like expectations, sexuality, finance, and family conflict, where direct questions can feel embarrassing.
